Waiting on the Lord

Several years ago, I watched Jerry Seinfeld’s stand-up routine on Netflix. Seinfeld pointed out that we are constantly on the move. We get excited about going somewhere, so we go. But we only go out long enough to feel the urge to return home. When we’re at work, we want to go home. When we’re traveling long distances by plane, we have to reach the airport. Once at the airport, we ask, “when are we getting on the plane?” The plane takes off, and then we ask, “when is this plane going to land?” After it lands, our next question is, “why don’t they open the door so we can get out?” Seinfeld is right. We’re always rushing toward the next thing, which makes Isaiah’s call to wait on the Lord all the more difficult to follow (Isaiah 40:31).

Waiting has never been a strength of mine, nor is it a strength of human beings in general. We dislike waiting because we are impatient. But that’s not the only reason we don’t like waiting: sometimes, waiting forces us to face the troubles, fears, anxieties, regrets, and heartbreaks we’ve tried so hard to hide deep within the most protected parts of our souls. To avoid confronting our inner struggles, we run from them by staying busy. If we have a bad relationship, we move on to another. If one career or job doesn’t work out, we quickly find something else. We’re always on the move, trying to find something or someone to give us what only God can provide, in God’s own time. And that requires waiting.

Even though waiting can be incredibly difficult, it is during this time that we receive the strength of the Lord: “but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). I believe waiting for the Lord can take many forms, such as prayer, fasting (which is very hard for me), and acts of service to those in need. When we wait on the Lord, we acknowledge that we are living our lives according to God’s timing and not our own. And when the Lord shows up, that is when we are able to soar.

Grace and Peace,

Will

FPC Sunday School

Sunday School is underway!

The Children’s Ministry team is continuing to ask for volunteers to be Sunday School teachers.  The only qualifications are faith in God and a love for children.  No need to be a Bible scholar as the curriculum we use at FPC provides a complete lesson plan each week.  By using a teacher-team approach the time commitment is minimal and the rewards are outstanding!  So please prayerfully consider joining our team and help to bring the word of the Lord to the youngest in our congregation.

For more information, please email Angela Himegarner at angela.himegarner@myfpc.org or call/text Angela at (816) 499-3998.

“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
Romans 12:12

We exist as a congregation to know Jesus Christ and to make Him known:

  • To proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ so all may come to know and love Him;
  • To nurture His people in joyful faith, fellowship, and commitment; and
  • To demonstrate His way of love in service to the world.

We use the Connector to share news of the coming week and beyond, the activities that involve a wide range of ages and interests at FPC.

When life is hard you need more than a cute poster.

If you are having a tough time with:
• Dealing with family problems
• Chronic or terminal illness in your family
• Grief
• Loneliness
• Divorce recovery

FPC has a group of Stephen Minister Caregivers trained to walk with you through these problems. They help you think things through, find resources available, look for a Biblical view of the problem, pray for you and with you if you wish. The 50 hours of training have provided them with an understanding of reflective listening, boundaries, and the importance of absolute confidentiality.

Since its beginning in 2017, Stephen Ministries helped hundreds of people both from FPC and the wider community journey through tough times.  If you want more information, you can talk to a pastor, a deacon, or one of the active Stephen Ministers listed below.

Tryg Knutson – 608-622-9539
