Our Shelter from the Storm and Our Eternal Home

Dear Friends,

This past Sunday we sang “Our God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come. Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home,” and Monty Cordell, our Elder for Finance, and I, spoke to you about October being the beginning of pledge season.  As you know, Faith for the Future is the theme of this year’s pledge campaign, and I’m asking you to think for a moment as to what that looks like to you.

We trust in the Lord’s providence for today, “Give us this day, our daily bread.”  We also trust in His ability to provide for us in the future, “our hope for years to come.”  If you are blessed to be a head-of-family, you have probably purchased a life insurance policy to provide for that family should something happen to prevent you from caring for them.  You are providing for their future, and doubtless you provide in many other ways as well.

Let’s say that you have taken your family to visit some of our beautiful National Parks, and would like to help preserve them for your children’s children to see.  You might donate on occasion, or you might be moved to bequeath a larger amount by naming the National Park System in your Will.  This funding helps provide for future generations.

Now let’s consider your church family, your family of faith.  Maybe you’ve grown up here at FPC, or maybe you’ve recently joined, and have found it to be a warm, sustaining experience where God’s love abounds.  Of course you always make your yearly pledge, right? but you’d also like to help provide for FPC’s future for years to come, so that others could enjoy what our church offers.  Naming FPC in your Will is a wonderful way to make that happen.

And, friends, because of our sale of a parcel of land, we now have an Endowment, which is fully invested to grow, and your additional gift can help invest in the future of FPC!  Talk to me, and I’ll direct you to someone who knows more than I do about the logistics, or speak to Monty Cordell for faster service.

I thank you for your prayerful consideration of this important matter,

Barb Cash

Stewardship Elder

Special Announcements:

FPC welcomes Joe Madsen

We’re thrilled to welcome Joe Madsen as FPC’s new Director of Student Ministry!

Joe grew up in Lester Prairie Minnesota, in a family of nine kids. He earned a degree in Elementary Education from Minnesota State University Moorhead and had the pleasure of teaching elementary school for eight years.

Joe has always loved working with kids and cherishes watching them take hold of new knowledge and grow. He’s married with three children, and says his most enjoyable job is being a dad. In his free time, Joe enjoys sports, spending time with family, and being outdoors.

Please join us in celebrating Joe as he steps into this important ministry role, guiding and inspiring the youth of FPC!

Follow up from Sunday Service

In the sermon on Sunday, I shared portions of an article by former atheist and Dutch politician, Ayeen Hirsi Ali, entitled Why I Am Now A Christian.  You can find the article at this link here.

The portion I quoted is cited by George Van Kooten, Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Cambridge, in his lecture Church and Gospel after the Fall of Secularism: Contours of a New Transept. You can find that lecture summarized here, and at the bottom of the page you can download the lecture in it’s entirety here.

Grace and Peace, Will

Heavenly Stretch

A six-week series of Heavenly Stretch will run every Thursday starting October 16 through November 20, from 5:15-6PM in room 305. Bring a mat and wear comfortable clothing.

Enter through the south education wing door. Recommended donation is $5 per session (unless you want to give more!) and will be given to Shelter from the Storm Ministry.

Heavenly Stretch combines slow stretching movements with scripture, prayer and Christian music. It is meant to be meditative and worshipful, and a way of praising God with our bodies. (Mark 12:30, Romans 12:1)

Heavenly Stretch is taught by Lolly Lawrence, who is a 200-hour certified yoga teacher. She also has certifications in Holy Yoga, chair yoga, and Silver Sneakers Yoga. She currently teaches at the Waunakee Village Center.

We exist as a congregation to know Jesus Christ and to make Him known:

  • To proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ so all may come to know and love Him;
  • To nurture His people in joyful faith, fellowship, and commitment; and
  • To demonstrate His way of love in service to the world.

We use the Connector to share news of the coming week and beyond, the activities that involve a wide range of ages and interests at FPC.

When life is hard you need more than a cute poster.

If you are having a tough time with:
• Dealing with family problems
• Chronic or terminal illness in your family
• Grief
• Loneliness
• Divorce recovery

FPC has a group of Stephen Minister Caregivers trained to walk with you through these problems. They help you think things through, find resources available, look for a Biblical view of the problem, pray for you and with you if you wish. The 50 hours of training have provided them with an understanding of reflective listening, boundaries, and the importance of absolute confidentiality.

Since its beginning in 2017, Stephen Ministries helped hundreds of people both from FPC and the wider community journey through tough times.  If you want more information, you can talk to a pastor, a deacon, or one of the active Stephen Ministers listed below.

Tryg Knutson – 608-622-9539
Jill Umlauf – 715-360-5962
