SWAN SONGS

As I sit to write this on a Wednesday night, tomorrow we will have the funeral celebration of life for Gordy Faust; this Sunday will be the first hymn sing we’ve had at FPC in a number of years. From the conjunction of those two events comes what follows.

The thought of planning elements of our own future funeral is for some uncomfortable and for others comforting. If you find yourself in the middle, let me assure you that indicating preferences is a valued gift to those we leave behind. In most circumstances, our loved ones are pleased to carry out things they know would have pleased us and our wishes lend direction to decision-making at a difficult time.

Over the years, I have seen a range from no preferences expressed at all, to a notebook full of expectations down to the smallest details. Extreme planning is rare, and there’s a degree to which it is better to allow some flexibility so that loved ones don’t stress over perfection and can include some of their own preferences; after all, our celebration of life and resurrection services, while glorifying God and celebrating us, are very importantly to help those who grieve our passing.

Funeral planning is like exercise: even a little bit can make a big difference. Picking a few favorite Scripture verses is great. Making suggestions for – even asking in advance – someone in your life who might speak at your service can be powerful. But if you want a meaningful and simple place to start: choose one, two, or three of your favorite hymns. You could sit and page through a hymnal. You could continually keep a list that you update and change any time you happen to come across a song you like a little bit better than one on your current list. It’s thoughtful if you either clear the list with closest loved ones, or leave a list with more songs than would be needed so they can choose from your list. If you choose a song that is a bit obscure, doing so in advance is an opportunity for you to find a copy of the music and lyrics to be used.

If all you do is pick one hymn, it will be a meaningful gift to those who care about you.

Whether you pick a single hymn or go on to leave numerous preferences, success depends on communication. It’s wise to tell your future surviving loved ones, maybe tell one or more pastors, but definitely write it down in three different places people would know to check when the time should come.

Planning for our funerals is a way to do in death what we are hopefully aiming to do in life: care for others. We do so confident that we live and die and live again in the grace and resurrection promises of our loving Lord Jesus.

God’s peace to you,

Pastor Ben

Continued Prayers for Texas

On Tuesday, the session voted to give $5,000 to the First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville, and $2,000 to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. This money will be used to provide aid to those affected by the Hill Country floods in Texas. The funds will come from the mission budget, where the church tithes 10% of income to support mission activities. Here is an article on First Presbyterian of Kerrville’s response to the flooding.

If you would like to donate to support this recovery effort, here is additional information and a QR code directly to the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA).

Saturday, August 9, at 10AM and Monday, August 11, at 6:30PM – FPC Care for the Caregivers Support Group

In the journey of caregiving, the road can often feel lonely and overwhelming. Recognizing this, FPC’s Care for Caregivers was created as a haven for those who provide care to others but often may forget to care for themselves. The monthly meetings are dedicated to providing emotional, mental, and spiritual encouragement to those who care for aging parents, family members with chronic illnesses, or loved ones with disabilities.

If you’re a caregiver (current or previous), consider attending a meeting. The meetings are drop-in style. Newcomers are always welcome. You can choose to share or just listen. Meetings are in Room 204, once on the second Monday of the month at 6:30pm, and once on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00am. If one of these times does not work for you, please let us know. To learn more, contact Marcia Chase, marchase@icloud.com or call/text at cell # (334)444-6610 and leave a message during work hours. Or just drop in to a meeting.

Remember: You’re not alone, and it’s okay to take time to care for yourself too!

When life is hard you need more than a cute poster.

If you are having a tough time with:
• Dealing with family problems
• Chronic or terminal illness in your family
• Grief
• Loneliness
• Divorce recovery

FPC has a group of Stephen Minister Caregivers trained to walk with you through these problems. They help you think things through, find resources available, look for a Biblical view of the problem, pray for you and with you if you wish. The 50 hours of training have provided them with an understanding of reflective listening, boundaries, and the importance of absolute confidentiality.

Since its beginning in 2017, Stephen Ministries helped hundreds of people both from FPC and the wider community journey, through tough times.  If you want more information, you can talk to a pastor, a deacon, or one of the active Stephen Ministers listed below.
