Stephen Ministry at FPC: Providing God’s Care to Hurting People
What is this ministry about?
Extensively trained and supervised Stephen Minister Caregivers provide high-quality, one-on-one confidential Christian care to anyone in need. They provide weekly visits and ongoing support as long as the care receiver needs. Should the care receiver have needs that are beyond the scope of a Stephen Minister Caregiver, they are referred to professional caregivers.
People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister Caregiver?” One way to put it is that they are The After People:
After the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life
After the funeral when everyone has left and the emotions you held at bay are crashing in on you
After you feel you no longer need deacon meals, but you are still so alone
After the pastor has visited for weeks on end, and you still feel you need someone to talk to
After the last child waves and drives away and the house seems so very empty
After baby arrives and you are feeling like you are over your head
After your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out
After the nursing home director says “Welcome to your new home”
What kind of care is offered from a Stephen Minister?
- CRISIS CARE – For people experiencing change(s) that significantly challenge their ability to cope.
- FOLLOW-UP CARE – After the crisis event.
- CHRONIC CARE – For a person whose situation is unlikely to change.
- PREVENTIVE CARE – Providing care before a crisis occurs.
- SUPPORTIVE CARE – Care for the caregiver.
How can I find out more about this ministry?
Call the church office at 608-949-9445, or reach out to a pastor or deacon. Stephen Minister Caregivers don’t replace the care of pastors and deacons. They carry it a step further.
Flashback to almost one year ago to our online service. Kirk provided a message entitled, “Finding a Way in the Wilderness.” He taught from Isaiah 43:16-19 and the moment for ministry highlighted FPC’s supported work at the River Food Pantry. Check it out! You can even download the vintage bulletin!

A visitation reminder…
Under current restrictions, hospitals are allowing patients to receive only 1 visitor each day (except clergy, who can go anytime). Before visiting the hospital, check with the family to verify that you can be that day’s visit. Watch upcoming Connectors for updates to these hospital visitation rules.
