New Member Class

We are excited that you have an interest in our "new member classes"! What follows is a brief outline of our 2008 class structure, location and focus, class times and how we make it convenient, and the dates for the next three class offerings in 2008. You do not need to sign-up, just show up on the first day of class. Here's a brief outline:

  • Session 1: Getting to know you! This is the initial meeting led by one of our Pastors. There will be several "connecting questions", handout of a course outline and other material. This session is required in order to become a joining member.
  • Session 2: What is a Christian? This is a Pastor led study of Christian and Presbyterian history and a second series of "connecting" questions.
  • Session 3: What's a Presbyterian? This class specifically focuses on the Presbyterian faith, its governance and terminology. There are handouts about "Being a Presbyterian". There is another "connecting" question and the session is led by one of our Pastors.
  • Session 4: Life at First Presbyterian Church. This session explores the history of First Presbyterian Church, what it means to be a part of it, and what you can expect from your membership.
  • Session 5: Finding Your Place at First Presbyterian Church. This session provides an opportunity for our church ministry leaders to meet you, and for you to meet them! You submit your "membership application" at this time. This session requires your attendance in order to join.

Joining Sunday: New members are introduced to the congregation on the sixth Sunday of our new member class.

How about location and meeting times? All classes are scheduled from 9:40 to 10:30 am, which falls between our Sunday church services.A wonderful convenience offered to parents of young children is that daycare is provided, or your children can attend children's Sunday School. You are required to attend at least three of the classes, however the first and fifth sessions are required in order to become a member. We also have a designated church member, or "class shepherd" who attends all classes with the group, assisting with all material, handouts, questions and issues.

So, what is our schedule for the balance of 2008?

  • January 20 through February 17, with joining Sunday on February 24.
  • April 6 through May 4, with joining Sunday on May 11.
  • Summer Class -- TBD
  • October 5 through November 2, with joining Sunday on November 9.

Thanks for taking the time to review our new member class process. If you do have an interest, you can click on "Becoming a Member", or contact our church staff.
